How does the CPOSF choose who gets a scholarship?

All applications for eligible candidates are carefully reviewed by an independent panel of Master Chiefs at the Navys Senior Enlisted Academy in Newport, Rhode Island. The panel grades the applications and develops the slate of selected awardees using standard evaluating criteria. The panel then presents that slate to the CPOSF Board of Directors. The CPOSF board does not participate in, influence, or question this panels final decision or the results. The CPOSF Board of Directors, in order to be fair and impartial, does not receive or handle in any way any of the applications and, therefore, will never know the identity of the applicants, except for those selected by the panel as awardees and alternates.

It is the stated goal of the CPOSF to eventually be able to provide financial assistance to all qualified applicants. However, until such time that we achieve the financial capability to do so, we must continue to use our current proven method to review applications and make fair and impartial selections.

Where can I find the eligibility requirements?

Please review Eligibility information. If you have additional questions either use our Guestbook or send an email to Marty Kidder.

Am I eligible for a scholarship even if I received one previously?

Anyone who meets the eligibility requirements will be considered for a scholarship.

Do I have to be working towards an associates or bachelors degree only?

No, if you plan on attending a technical, trade or vocational school you are also eligible for a scholarship.

Who decides which applicants are awarded scholarships?

All applications will be mailed to the Senior Enlisted Academy Alumni Association (SEAAA). A board from the current Senior Enlisted Academy Class will review all applications and determine awardees.

My spouse is currently enrolled in graduate school, is she able to apply for the CPOSF scholarship? Is there a separate application for spouses and if not does she address her spouse in her paper/essay?

The application should also address the spouse. We will add that to the form later to prevent further confusion, but for now feel free to write in the spouse's information. Currently we do not award scholarships for advanced degrees (beyond BA / BS). This was a very tough decision by the Board of Directors but they felt with our very limited resources we should target helping those CPO families with their initial degree programs. As our fund grows through the generosity of our fellow Chiefs we will revisit this current policy. As we mention in our website our vision is to be financially able to help the family of every Chief (active, reserve, retired). We are progressing toward that goal, but we are not there yet.

All we need from the spouse is the application and the sponsor's (chief) name. The spouse or guardian can sign on the sign the sponsor / guardian line.

Do we need to submit SAT scores with the application? How about college acceptance letters?

We do not need to know the SAT scores to award the scholarships nor do we require college acceptance letters. We send the scholarship directly to the college bursar in Aug or Sep in the name of the recipient.

My sponsor was a Chief who was selected into the LDO / CWO community. Am I still eligible to apply for a CPOSF scholarship?

Currently our scholarships are not available to those chiefs who chose to convert to LDO and CWO. We base this on relative need and feel that an average LDO and CWO has more disposable income than CPOs. Since we do not currently require a financial aid statement this becomes a criteria.

What is the amount of a CPOSF Scholarship?

Our award is set at $2,000.00 though the award may change each year based on donations and number of scholarships to be awarded.

I have been asked to write a letter of recommendation (LOR), where do I mail it?

You would mail the LOR to:

Senior Enlisted Academy Alumni Association
C/O The CPO Scholarship Fund
1269 Elliot Ave
Newport, RI 02841-1525

Be sure to include the candidate's name.

Can grandchildren of retired CPOs apply for this scholarship?

Currently our scholarships are not available to the grandchildren of chiefs. We base this on the very limited amount of resources we have for scholarships. We have discussed changing the eligibility criteria in the future but currently we believe we best serve the CPO community by offering assistance to immediate family members of chiefs.

I am a single Active Duty Chief, can I apply for a CPOSF scholarship?

Unfortunately we do not award scholarships to Chiefs, only the family members of Chiefs. Our reasoning is that as military members we usually have other educational (TA and GI Bill) funding sources not available to our families.

My sponsor is a Marine (or another Service senior enlisted member). Am I still eligible to apply for a CPOSF scholarship?

Our scholarships are only available to the family members of US Navy Chiefs (Active, Reserve or Retired).

When will the application be for download on your website?

The CPOSF scholarship application will be available for download on our website on 1 Jan of each year.

When are the applications due?

Your application should be received at the address on the last page of the application form, no later than 1 April of each year.
